  • 180 grams granulated sugar
  • 240 grams plain yogurt
  • 115 grams melted butter or ghee
  • 5 grams baking powder (about 1 teaspoon)
  • Zest of 2 medium oranges (about 2 tablespoons)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Blanched almonds or orange zest (for decoration)
  • 480 ml water (for syrup)
  • 350 grams granulated sugar (for syrup)
  • 15 ml lemon juice (about 1 tablespoon)
  • 15 ml orange juice (about 1 tablespoon)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F). Grease a 23 cm (9 inch) round cake pan.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine semolina, sugar, baking powder, and orange zest.
  3. Add yogurt, melted butter or ghee, and vanilla extract into the dry ingredients. Mix until smooth.
  4. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and score the top for easy serving.
  5. Bake for about 30–40 minutes until golden brown; ensure a toothpick comes out clean when inserted.
  6. While baking, prepare the syrup by combining water, sugar, and lemon juice in a saucepan over medium heat until dissolved. Simmer for about 10 minutes.
  7. Once baked, pour warm syrup evenly over the cake while it's still hot. Allow to cool completely before serving.
