  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tsp lemon zest
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 8 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 3 cups powdered sugar (sifted)
  • 1 cup black cocoa powder (sifted)
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Chocolate skulls (for decoration)
  • Fresh blackberries (for decoration)
  • Dried rose petals (for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two 9-inch round baking pans and line the bottoms with parchment paper.
  2. In a mixing bowl, sift together flour, black cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk eggs with buttermilk, hot coffee, canola oil, and vanilla until combined.
  4. Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients and stir gently until just combined.
  5. Divide the batter between the prepared pans and bake for about 30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
  6. For the blackberry compote, combine fresh blackberries, sugar, lemon juice, lemon zest, cinnamon stick, water, and cornstarch in a saucepan over medium heat until thickened.
  7. Beat softened cream cheese and butter together; gradually mix in powdered sugar and black cocoa powder until smooth.
  8. Once cakes are cooled completely, layer them with blackberry compote between layers and frost the outside with chocolate frosting.
